Sonos may wish to focus more on developing the future and, of course, what company wouldn’t prefer its customers to buy more devices.Īnyone watching the trends in music streaming services and wireless headphones can’t fail to notice a drive towards audio quality with hi-res music. There are costs to maintaining an ever-growing fleet of older models. There may be other factors mixed up in there too. “Legacy products were introduced between 20 and, given the age of the technology, do not have enough memory or processing power to sustain future innovation.” That’s Sonos’s justification. With Sonos, it’s been different but, while its customers have every right to be upset, how long can we really expect ongoing software support for anyway? Remember, these products won't stop working - they might just not get the latest bells, whistles and tweaks. No one complains, we'd argue, because nobody fell in love with them. Let's be honest, few people complain about their defunct multi-room speakers made by LG, Sony, Panasonic, Denon, Samsung, Pure, Yamaha and whomever else has released a wireless audio product in recent years. Sonos was the first to get multi-room right some 15 years ago when it launched the Sonos ZonePlayer and Controller, and it’s now become a victim of its own continuing success. It’s the US brand’s advances in convenience, not audio quality, that have made it so popular. So now I have an issue. No other major company in audio has had to deal with technology upgrades to quite the same degree as Sonos. I've tested this for over two hours, using all the previous problem triggers, and the system has not missed a beat. I disabled the firewall on the modem, and boom! Instant connection to the Sonos system using my iOS devices. I think the only option for me now is to await a new version of the Sonos app to be released and hopefully the issue will be addressed.ĮDIT #2: Ok, so after some more playing around, I decided to test if this was a firewall issue. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but the error remains. The app is up to date, version 13.1.4, build 63290210. This is the reason that I don't believe this is a local network issue. I can replicate the errors on iOS and the success on Android and Windows again and again and again. I say that this happens specifically with the iOS controllers because the Windows 10 app and the Android app both work without fail when opening/closing/opening the app. To fix, I need to force close the app, disconnect and reconnect wifi on the iphone, reopen the app and everything will work fine until the next time I either switch to another app or the screen goes to sleep. If I then open another app and return to the Sonos app, it will freeze and cannot connect to the system. Opening the app and beginning music will work occasionally. I've narrowed down that my troubles are specifically down to the iOS app. What did you all do to fix your system? How do you live with the Sonos app being so unreliable in its connection to the system? I love how the system sounds and how it works (when it works), but this app is driving me out of my mind.ĮDIT: So after much more troubleshooting, including numerous channel changes, more restarts, switching off Private address in iOS wifi settings, etc. I know this issue happens a lot, as I feel like I've read just about every troubleshooting thread online. In the initial call they said everything actually looks fine on their end. I'm yet to contact support for a second time to see if they have any further fixes. I did this, it woked fine for 30 minutes, then back to the same). Things I've tried:* Complete system on wifi vs Beam wired by ethernet and One SL's on wifi.* Numerous resets of the modem router and the speakers* Setting static IP addresses for the speakers* Creating port-forwarding rules for the speakers on my modem router to bypass the firewall* Turning off band-steering on the modem* Setting non-competing wireless channels for the router and for the Sonos system.* Uninstalling and reinstalling the Sonos app* Submitting diagnostics and chatting with Sonos support (which suggested the wireless channel change for the Sonos. Let's fix it" error message? My current setup is Beam and 2 x One SL's, controller app on an iPhone 12 Pro and iPad Pro 2020, as well as a partner using an Android phone. Will the app find my system, or will I see the dreaded "Unable to connect to Sonos. Opening the app is always a flip of the coin. I honestly feel like I'm at wits end with the Sonos app.
